In 1945, Ed Kieffer and Len Sargent started this printing business. After a few years as partners they decided the business could be run with just one owner, so with a flip of a coin they decided who would continue in the printing business and who would go to the local newspaper (Record-Herald as it was called then) and run the linotype machine. Ed called the coin correctly and, as they say, that’s when SUN Printing began. Today we are a second-generation, family owned business. Not sure if we all would have survived working together in newspaper.
When asked where the printing industry is going Kevin tells us, “It’s staying here. My father used to set type by hand; and some of it was made of wood. That was how he provided solutions. We do the same thing today, just in different ways.”
With the industry always changing Kevin knows that he’ll never get bored. Maybe tired, but never bored.
Karla knows that print requires a knowledgeable, conscientious team to get it done. “Understanding files, adding creativity, balancing color, selecting the right paper and ink, and making sure it gets done on time are all important.”
She also shared with us that when she started in the industry they were still melting lead, using a manual typewriter and made do with a single phone tethered to the wall.
When asked about how he ended up at SUN Kirt left the question blank but I think it may have something to do with his family ties. Kirt is so dedicated to Sun that when asked about retirement he stated, “Retirement was not an option!” It is comforting to know that Sun will be in good hands for a long, long time.
I began my career at Sun Printing because it had a family influence. ( I think I’m one of them)
Ken has been known to say (more than a few times) “Choose Sun Printing and you’ll get people who care along with the equipment and knowledge to support it.”
Kathy sees the printing industry taking even more of a turn into the multi-media arena.
Kathy prides herself on the fact that at SUN every single job is important and “special orders don’t upset us.”
TESTIMONIALS
SUN Printing is my “go-to” place for helping my communication projects stand out. Whether it is four-color print projects, web design, graphics, or solutions to tricky problems—SUN is my first source for information and support. When people ask me who did that—I always say I did, with a lot of help from the experts at SUN Printing. I wouldn’t even think of putting my client’s projects in anyone else’s hands.
We’ve worked with Sun since we opened our doors nearly 4 years ago. We do everything from posters to direct mail to brochures to experimental printing on different types of material. The reason we keep coming back to SUN because we don’t like surprises. We know what we're going to get when we need it and it's going to be right. No surprises. It's a good thing.
We were a growing business and in a pinch. We had a new business pitch coming up and didn't have the resources to create our pitch deck. The last thing we thought was that a "printer" could bring the creative resources to the table to help us out. Fast forward to a few weeks later and SUN had helped us not only print our deck but they designed a logo, wrote copy, and even created a microsite for the pitch. Needless to say, we won. Thank you SUN.
